2017 SCIAC Men's Water Polo Athletes of the Week

O'Brien scored 13 goals and notched 10 assists over the Panthers’ first nine games of the season. He added 40 drawn ejections and secured nine steals, highlighted by a two-goal, two-steal showing in Chapman’s 8-7 victory over No. 2 Johns Hopkins on Sept. 9. To close out the week, the senior from Newport Beach, Calif. found the net five times in the Panthers’ narrow, 14-12 loss to Wagner on Sept. 10.

Deer led CMS to a 2-0 week totaling seven goals and a pair of steals as the Stags improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC action. In a 14-6 victory over conference foe Caltech,Deer netted a hat-trick and secured both of his steals for the week, before notching four scores in a 18-9 victory over Riverside CC.

Viteri scored three goals in a, thrilling, 7-6 overtime victory over CWPA Varsity Division III top-ranked team Pomona-Pitzer, and added three more scores and two assists in a 12-8 win over SCIAC foe Occidental. Viteri highlighted the Poets’ 2-0 week by finding the back of the net in overtime to upset the Sagehens who are ranked 19th in the CWPA Varsity Poll Top 20 Poll.

Whittier's Zdolsek helped the Poets to a 3-0 week with SCIAC victories over La Verne (13-12) and Redlands (6-4), as well as a non-conference upset win over Loyola-Marymount (13-9). Zdolsek totaled six goals and three assists during the three-game stretch including a game-winning strike against the Leopards. He also netted four of Whittier’s six markers in the win over Redlands before chipping in a goal and an assist against Loyola Marymount.

Deer guided CMS to a 3-2 week on the strength of 15 goals. The Stags topped conference foe La Verne, 18-8, and earned wins over Conn. College (17-10) and Concorida (12-11). CMS’s two losses came to Johns Hopkins (14-13 OT), and Air Force. Against La Verne and Conn. College, Deer netted three goals in each contest before firing in nine of the Stags’ 13 goals against Johns Hopkins.

Diemer was tremendous in goal for Pomona-Pitzer during the week, helping the Sagehens to a 3-1 week which featured wins over Johns Hopkins (11-9), Brown (7-6), and MIT (8-7). Pomona-Pitzer’s lone setback came to Harvard, 11-5. Diemer totaled 41 saves over the course of four games, including a 16-save effort in the Sagehens’ upset win over Brown.

Diemer was once again a force between the posts for Pomona-Pitzer, helping the Sagehens collect three conference victories, including a 10-9 win over Whittier which gave the Poets their first SCIAC loss of the 2017 season. After notching two saves in a victory over Caltech, Diemer was tremendous in Pomona-Pitzer’s one-goal victory against the Poets, turning aside 14 shots as the Sagehens improved to 7-1 in SCIAC play.

Gardhouse of Cal Lutheran paced the Kingsmen to a 2-0 week which featured wins over La Verne (13-9) and Redlands (12-7) - the team’s first victory on the road against the Bulldogs in program history. Gardhouse scored five goals against the Leopards and notched three steals, and followed with four goals against Redlands. This is Gardhouse’s first SCIAC Athlete of the Week award this season.

Elliott of Pomona-Pitzer helped guide the Sagehens to a 2-0 week in SCIAC competition with wins over Redlands (9-4) and Occidental (15-4). Elliott registered five goals during the two-game week for Pomona-Pitzer, finding the back of the net twice against the Bulldogs. He then netted a hat-trick in his squad’s victory over the Tigers as Pomona-Pitzer improved to 10-1 in SCIAC play to remain atop the conference standings.

Zdolsek of Whittier paced the Poets to a 2-0 week and the second seed in the 2017 SCIAC Tournament. The Linkoping, Sweden native notched eight goals, an assist and seven steals during the stretch, including five goals in a 12-9 win over Chapman. He added three more wins in an 11-10 overtime win against Cal Lutheran, with two of his scores against the Kingsmen coming in the extra stanza.
